STEM Basketball, Full Kit
The STEM Basketball program is a supplemental curriculum that can be implemented in school classrooms, after-school programs, and summer camp settings. This 21st century, hands-on curriculum designed in the 5E model is student-centered and instructors will have ease facilitating the STEM activities. Participating students receive a STEM education while simultaneously learning the science behind the sport of basketball.
STEM Basketball gives students the opportunity to get behind the sport they love with lessons centered around the contents of basketballs, the innovation and technology behind basketball shoes, creating their own shooting devices, figuring out their own shooting percentages, and much more. The STEM curriculum allows students to see the science behind the sport with these hands on learning exercises. The STEM Basketball supplemental curriculum will assist students’ growth and potential both on and off the court through eight lessons that include information on:
- Understanding the contents of a basketball on the molecular level and how temperature affects play
- Evaluating the changes that basketball shoes have made over time and why
- Engineering their own shooting apparatus to explain some of Sir Isaac Newton’s Laws
- Teaching students how to calculate their own field goal percentage, just like the greatest players in the NBA

STEM Basketball is an educational enrichment program that combines STEM education and the real-life application of basketball. It is made up of eight (8) modules, several with worksheets, all which align with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and/or Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and/or National Standards for K-12 Physical Education. Each STEM Basketball no-sports equipment kit includes a teacher’s manual -- that is easily administered -- and reusable science supplies in order for the program to be fully implemented and turnkey. 5E sequenced lessons are specifically composed and differentiated for grades 3-5 and another set for grades 6-8. The program is well designed and scalable for teachers, administrators and even volunteers for school classrooms, after-school programs and in camp settings.
STEM Basketball kits can be used numerous times over several years. In addition to the teacher’s manual, a single STEM Basketball kit includes five (5) indoor basketballs, five (5) outdoor basketballs, five (5) 25’ tape measures, five (5) hair dryers, five (5) calipers, twelve (12) protective eyewear sets, five (5) cut ball swatches – indoor, five (5) cut ball swatches – outdoor, five (5) digital timers, five (5) rolls of masking tape, one thousand (1000) craft sticks, one hundred (100) plastic spoons, five-hundred (500) rubber bands, two (2) ball bags, one (1) ball pump, one (1) set of inflation needles.
