Cyber Bullying: A Prevention Curriculum for Grade 6-12

Audience: Health Educators
Format: Book
Language: English The Movement Against Bullying has reported its 2014 Cyber Bullying Statistics, including:

  • 25% of teenagers report repeated bullying via their cell phone or on the Internet
  • 52% of young people report being cyberbullied
  • 95% of teens who witnessed bullying on social media report that others, like them, have ignored the behavior
  • Of the young people who reported cyberbullying incidents against them, 33% of them reported their bullies issued online threats

Cyberbullying can destroy a student's sense of security at home and harm a student's performance and well-being at school. What's more, students who bully and students who are bullied face a greater risk for problem behaviors such as vandalism, theft, truancy, carrying a weapon, or using alcohol or other drugs.

Hazelden, a part of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, has developed two extremely popular research-based cyberbullying curricula (for Grades 3-5 and Grades 6-12).  Cyber Bullying Grades 6-12, 2nd Edition, is a highly engaging curriculum that has been updated to reflect current technological advances. It includes the latest information and statistics on cyberbullying and how best to address and prevent it.

The 8-session Cyber Bullying: A Prevention Curriculum for Grades 6-12:

  • Raises student and parent awareness of what cyberbullying is and why it is so harmful
  • Equips students with the skills and resources to treat each other respectfully when using online tools
  • Gives students information about how to get help if they, or others they know, are being cyberbullied
  • Teaches students how to use technology in positive ways

All materials are included in the facilitators guide and on a CD-ROM. These include: reproducible parent resources, student fact sheets, program poster and student handouts, resources to address cyberbullying school-wide (school policies, legal concerns, etc.), peer leader training materials, and a short training on cyberbullying for program facilitators.
