In Her Shoes: Living with Domestic Violence
In Her Shoes is an experiential learning activity. With stories and information based on the experiences of real survivors, participants engage in a simulation in which they walk in the shoes of the various characters experiencing abusive and controlling relationships. Participants move, act, think and make choices as a person experiencing an abusive relationship. As participants read through scenarios describing the current situation of a character, they make choices about their character's next steps and move to different stations based on their choices.
A critical part of the simulation is the debrief. Group discussion helps participants answer lingering questions, gives the facilitator an opportunity to dispel persistent myths and misunderstandings, and helps participants engage in ways they can make meaningful change both individually and locally.
The Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence developed the revolutionary In Her Shoes series as a community education tool designed for learning about domestic violence. This version is the original simulation, great for educating a broad range of community and professional groups of adults and youth ages 14 and up. It is desgined to be facilitated in a single session of one to two hours.
The toolkit includes a Facilitator's Guide, laminated Station and Character Cards, Story Cards and a Quick Start Guide.
