Why "STI"?
You may see the terms "STD" and "STI" both used in patient education materials. Many leading authoritative organizations have switched to using STI. Those who make a distinction between these terms often say that STD describes a disease condition with visible signs and describable symptoms—a drip, an itch, a bump, or fatigue—while STI encompasses the broader spectrum of conditions both with and without symptoms. Using the term "infection" may also lessen the stigma people frequently feel about having these conditions, making them more amenable to testing and treatment. ETR has switched to using "STI" in our materials. A version of this pamphlet that uses the term "STD" is still available as a special order if your organization prefers to use this term.
