Smokefree Housing

Communities Energized for Health works on smokefree multiunit housing (like apartments, condos, duplexes, and mobile homes) in Yolo and Tehama Counties. Allowing smoking in multiunit housing can lead to poor health, including asthma and other lung problems, especially among pregnant people, children, and the elderly.2

Smoke can easily migrate and from other units and common areas through: doorways, cracks in walls, plumbing, electrical lines, ventilation systems.

Making housing smokefree, including individual units and common areas, protects residents and staff from exposure to secondhand smoke, saves properties money on costs to turnover units, and significantly reduces fire risk for buildings.3

If you are a resident experiencing exposure to secondhand smoke in Yolo or Tehama County and would like support, please email Nicole Morgan at Nicole.morgan@etr.org or call 510-913-9708.

Additional Benefits for Property Owners & Managers

Smokefree properties have lower maintenance costs, faster turnover time, and reduce the cleaning needs that come with renovating smoke-damaged units after a resident who smokes has moved out. Compared to smokefree units, cleaning and refurbishing costs can be up to $3,000 more in units with heavy smoking. Additional expenses may include:

  • Extra cleaning or replacing of carpet
  • Replacing blinds
  • Replacing surfaces with burns or stains
  • Repainting walls and ceilings, often with multiple coats to cover stains or smells.

CEH offers FREE assistance with:

  • Implementing & enforcing a smokefree policy
  • Sample smokefree property lease addendum language
  • Smokefree property signage
  • Presentations to staff and residents about the benefits of smokefree housing
  • Resources to help tenants quit tobacco use.

If you are an owner or manager of a multiunit housing complex and would like to learn more about the benefits of going smoke and tobacco free, please email Nicole Morgan at Nicole.morgan@etr.org or call 510-913-9708.
