ETR Associates’ Watsonville TEC Student Wins Prestigious Award from National Center for Women and Information Technology
High school student Stephanie Barraza recently won the prestigious Bay Area Award for Aspirations in Computing from the National Center for Women and Information Technology. Ms. Barraza won the San Francisco Bay Area award over 25 other girls and was a runner-up among thousands of students for the national award. Ms. Barraza is a youth leader in Watsonville Tecnologia-Education-Communidad's (TEC) Tech Teach program, where she teaches computer literacy to elementary school students. Watsonville TEC is an ETR Associates project funded by the National Science Foundation.

Watsonville TEC's Tech Teach program is a two-component youth information technology (IT) education program consisting of a near-peer educator training program for high school students, and a hands-on, project-based after-school IT program for fifth graders led by high school students in Watsonville, California. Watsonville TEC is managed through ETR Associates' Center for Youth Success, and brings together partners from public education and other STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) focused after-school programs, such as Math Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) from the University of California, to create an educational and career pathway that supports students through critical transitions in their secondary school career.
ETR Associates' Jacob Martinez is the Watsonville TEC project director. Steve Bean is ETR Associates' director for the Center for Youth Success and acts as the principal investigator. Dr. Jill Denner from ETR Associates' Research Department serves as co-principal investigator on Watsonville TEC, and is the project evaluation director.
