Healthy Eating (Nutrition)

The BE concepts of salience and convenience are utilized for this part of the program. Increasing intake of fruits, vegetables, and water are key goals. The HAT interventionist encourages adolescents to utilize reminders in prominent places, such as placing an ultrasound picture on the refrigerator to encourage healthy eating goals during pregnancy. The HAT team may wish to provide a fruit bowl for each participant to place in a prominent place in the eating area such as the kitchen table or counter.

In the intervention study, the HAT team also distributed smoothie makers and other kitchen supplies (e.g., storage containers) at no charge to interested participants to make the consumption of fruits and vegetables easier and more noticeable. The HAT interventionist can also provide participants with free samples of unfamiliar healthy foods and demonstrate easy ways to prepare them.
