ETR Associates' Dr. Douglas Kirby Participates in UNESCO International Technical Advisory Group

ETR Associates' Dr. Douglas Kirby was recently invited to participate in an International Technical Consultation on Scaling Up Sexuality Education with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) at its world headquarters in Paris, France. The consultation, which took place from March 13-15, 2012, brought together more than 40 experts and key stakeholders involved in the development and implementation of sexuality education programs. During the three-day program, Dr. Kirby gave a presentation focused on scaling up sex education in countries around the world. The conclusions from the International Technical Consultation will help UNESCO form the basis of a publication on how to achieve sexuality education on a larger scale.

About Dr. Douglas Kirby

For more than 30 years, Douglas Kirby, PhD, has directed statewide and nationwide studies of adolescent sexual behavior, abstinence programs, sexuality and STD/HIV education programs, school-based clinics, school condom-availability programs and youth development programs. He co-authored research on ETR Associates' Reducing the Risk, Safer Choices, Draw the Line and All4You! curricula. All of these programs significantly reduced unprotected sex by delaying sex, reducing the number of partners, increasing condom use or increasing contraceptive use. His summaries of the effects of programs in the United States and around the world have been published by international organizations such as UNESCO and the World Health Organization. He has also conducted research in Uganda on factors that have led to the reduction of HIV transmission in that country, and is doing work in South Africa.
