Dr. Kirby's presentation focused on the evidence of the impact of sexuality and HIV education programs and the characteristics of programs that are effective. Dr. Kirby, a world-renowned sexual health expert, has been contracted by USAIDS to advise the South African Department of Education on their strategy on HIV and AIDS. About Dr. Douglas Kirby

For more than 30 years, Douglas Kirby, PhD, has directed statewide and nationwide studies of adolescent sexual behavior, abstinence programs, sexuality and STD/HIV education programs, school-based clinics, school condom-availability programs and youth development programs. He co-authored research on ETR Associates' Reducing the Risk, Safer Choices, Draw the Line and All4You! curricula. All of these programs significantly reduced unprotected sex by delaying sex, reducing the number of partners, increasing condom use or increasing contraceptive use. His summaries of the effects of programs in the United States and around the world have been published by international organizations such as UNESCO and the World Health Organization. He has also conducted research in Uganda on factors that have led to the reduction of HIV transmission in that country, and done work in Tanzania, Swaziland and South Africa.
