ETR Associates Awarded National Science Foundation Grant for Watsonville TEC Project

ETR Associates was recently awarded a 3-year grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to advance the work of the Watsonville Tecnología Educación Comunidad (TEC). Watsonville TEC, located in Watsonville, California, is a program that encourages Latino youth in underserved communities to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The NSF grant, called "Computer Science (CS) for the Social Good: Using Near-Peers to Engage Latino/a Students," expands the existing TechTeach program, in which high school students receive training and instruct groups of fifth-grade students in information technology. It is a partnership with the Pajaro Valley Unified School District's Extended Learning Program, the Global Information Internship Program at UC Santa Cruz, the Computing Alliance for Hispanic-Serving Institutions, and Golden Evaluation and Policy Research. The funding will allow Watsonville TEC to determine how infusing CS and its connection to social values and change into K-12 programs can enhance the learning and teaching of computer science for Latino students in the United States. The long-term goal of the project is to create a sustainable and scalable program that increases students' interest and intention to pursue computer science.
