"The Road to Evidence-Based Excellence"
Janet Collins, PhD.

Dr. Collins will share her national perspective on the importance of implementing evidence-based programs to create healthy youth. She will answer the questions:

  • Why are evidence-based programs crucial now?
  • What can we learn from the successful implementation of evidence-based programs to date?
  • How do we assure excellence in our implementation of evidence-based programs?
  • What trends in government funding might affect evidence-based programming in the future?

Dr. Collins will present a continuum of effective implementation and challenge participants to aspire to higher levels of excellence in evidence-based curricula training and implementation. Her presentation is sure to be educational and inspirational.

Smart Adaptations: Making Adaptations while Maintaining Fidelity

This presentation will discuss how to make smart adaptations to evidence-based curricula to address the unique needs of youth in diverse settings.

The session will answer these questions:

  • What does curriculum fidelity really mean?
  • What if the curriculum isn't the perfect fit for the youth I teach?
  • What adaptations strengthen a curriculum's effectiveness and what kind sabotage it?

Trainings

Skills-Based Trainings for Educators

Skills-based trainings will be provided for teachers and community-based educators in four concurrent tracks for each of the four chosen evidence-based curricula: Keepin' It REAL, TimeWise, Becoming a Responsible Teen, and Reducing the Risk.

Each two-day, interactive training will prepare Institute participants to effectively facilitate the evidence-based curriculum with the youth they serve. Training participants will:

  • gain a theoretical grounding in the curriculum
  • learn how the key student skills and lessons are sequenced
  • learn crucial health content needed to support the curriculum
  • learn and practice the curriculum's key instructional skills, such as answering sensitive questions or managing roleplays, and
  • learn how to apply the "smart adaptation" guidelines for tailoring the curriculum to the needs of their youth while maintaining curriculum fidelity.

Training of Trainers

The one-day interactive Training of Trainers (TOT) trainings prepare educators and trainers to confidently train/prepare other educators to facilitate one of the four evidence-based curricula. TOT participants will:

  • gain a deeper understanding of the research and theory which support the curriculum
  • learn and practice key trainer facilitation skills, and
  • gain a deeper grounding in the "smart adaptation" guidelines for curriculum fidelity.

The TOT is required for educators and trainers interested in joining ETR's Training Cadre.

Themes

Evidence-Based Curricula

When a curriculum is deemed "evidence-based," that means the curriculum has been rigorously evaluated and has produced positive health outcomes for youth. In other words, the curriculum works!

ETR's Summer Training Institute provides a chance to focus on the importance of evidence-based curricula and strategies to maximize the likelihood of success in producing positive health outcomes in youth.

Collaborative Learning through Learning Communities

In order to facilitate group and individual learning during the Institute, participants will periodically work in small groups to share their insights and questions about what they are learning.

This theme of "collaborative learning" will continue after the Institute by the creation of an online Learning Community. Participants will be invited to join the ETR facilitated Learning Community to maintain connections and develop new relationships with other educators and administrators. The online Learning Community can be used to:

  • share success stories and challenges
  • get assistance regarding implementation challenges
  • gain new motivation, and
  • be seen and acknowledged for the good work that you do
