Intervention #1 - One-On-One Counseling Session
The HIV Counseling Session training prepares educators and youth workers to reduce youths' risk of HIV through one-on-one counseling. The HIV Counseling Session will help youth to:
- Clarify their own HIV risk behaviors
- Determine what helps and hinders use of risk-reducing behaviors
- Develop a plan for overcoming personal challenges to using safer behaviors
- Get information and tools to carry out this plan
The intervention is 30-60 minutes in length and is appropriate for youth in short-term or long-term stay situations. Training participants will learn a step-by-step format for conducting the HIV Counseling Session with youth.
Intervention #2 - Video Discussion Group
The HIV Video Discussion Group training prepares educators to lead a group discussion about HIV topics through the use of a trigger video, Blood Lines . The Blood Lines Video Discussion Group will help youth to:
- Learn about HIV transmission, prevention and testing
- Identify their own risk behaviors
- Consider the barriers to using safer behaviors and ways to overcome those barriers
The intervention is one to two hours in length and is appropriate for youth in short-term or long-term stay situations. Intervention #3 - Evidence-Based Curriculum
The Evidence-Based Curriculum training prepares educators to implement the multi- session curriculum, Making Proud Choices!. Making Proud Choices! will help youth to:
- Increase their knowledge about STDs, HIV and pregnancy prevention
- Learn how safer sex can help them to achieve their goals and dreams
- Gain the confidence and skills to reduce their risk of STDs, HIV and pregnancy
The intervention has eight one-hour sessions and is most appropriate for youth in long-term stay situations. Training participants will learn to implement the curriculum with fidelity while discussing appropriate adaptations for the juvenile justice population. Training of Trainers
In addition to the training options described above, training participants also have the option of adding on a one-day Training of Trainers (TOT) for their selected intervention. The TOT builds the capacity of participants to teach staff in their facilities to implement the selected HIV prevention intervention.
