Details for Participation
Study in Progress — no longer recruiting
new participants.
If you are a district or school administrator, an educator, or
involved in middle school substance use prevention programs or health
education, we hope you will be involved in the California keepin'
it REAL project.
Stipend
If you are an educator,
you will receive $250 for participating in the project.
What's Required for Educators
Participating educators will:
- Teach a 10-lesson version of keepin' it REAL to students
in grades 6-9 in the fall of 2007. The curriculum (teacher's
manual, video and student workbook) will be provided for each
teacher for free!!
- Prepare to teach keepin' it REAL in one of two ways,
provided free of cost and based on the study group to which each
teacher is randomly assigned:
- Standard Preparation: Self-directed preparation
using the standard keepin' it REAL curriculum materials.
- Online Training: Preparation using the
web-based training.
- Complete two online surveys — one before and one after
implementing keepin' it REAL.
- Complete a lesson log after teaching each keepin’
it REAL lesson.
A sample of educators will be observed teaching one of the lessons
or selected to participate in follow-up telephone interviews for
an additional stipend.
Benefits of Participation
There is no doubt that educators participating in the study have
an important role. We believe the benefits of participation in the
study are significant for:
- Students: who are able to participate in a
model, evidence-based drug resistance program for no additional
cost to schools.
- Educators: who receive training to an evidence-based
curriculum, a $250 stipend, the opportunity to meet California
Content Standards and Health
Framework (pdf files) while providing substance use prevention
to their students, and the opportunity to participate in a research
project that will improve the way in which prevention programs
are implemented.
- Schools/Districts: that own the curriculum
and, because of the training provided to teachers, have increased
capacity to continue implementing it in the future, and that may
see less behavior problems, fewer absences, and even increased
test scores as students resist drugs.
