FIT-NETS Case Manager/Training Specialist II

ETR Associates, a private, non-profit, health education organization, is seeking a qualified person to join its Training Department as a Training Specialist II.

Education, Training and Research (ETR) Associates is a national center for publications, training, research and clearinghouse services in family life, and comprehensive health education, substance abuse prevention, HIV/AIDS prevention and tobacco use education and prevention. ETR’s publishing division publishes and distributes curricula, books and pamphlets in these areas for schools, clinics and youth-serving organizations across the country.

Overview

The Student Advisor/FIT-NETS Case Manager will meet with students individually and in groups to advise them, model good fitness and nutrition behaviors, mentor them and facilitate a variety of experiences to support them in exercising and eating nutritiously. Using an innovative prevention case management-based program model this position will perform informal counseling, direct students’ independent physical exercise experiences, and provide resources and referrals to assist students in overcoming any and all barriers to positive fitness and nutrition. The Student Advisor/FIT-NETS Case Manager will work in collaboration with school site faculty and staff and under the supervision of an ETR Project Coordinator.

Responsibilities and Duties

Works at one alternative school site in Santa Clara County to implement the FIT-NETS demonstration program, including conducting pilot tests of program components, activities and protocols as they are developed. Pilot-testing and implementation of the FIT-NETS demonstration program will include, but is not limited to:

  • Working with school faculty and staff to create usable indoor and outdoor program space at the school site.
  • Working with school site faculty and staff to recruit students to participate in FIT-NETS.
  • Working one-on-one with case managed students to develop independent wellness plans, including helping students choose appropriate fitness activities from a menu of options.
  • Instructing students in proper exercise and fitness techniques.
  • Modeling and facilitating positive fitness behaviors by exercising with students individually and in groups.
  • Leading groups of students in physical education activities.
  • Providing informal counseling, resources and referrals.
  • Following “duty-to-report” laws where required by law and involve appropriate, school, district or county staff in cases of student crisis.
  • Attending school staff meetings.
  • Maintaining and storing program equipment and supplies.
  • Setting up for program classes and sessions and cleaning up afterwards.
  • Employing effective classroom- and behavior management strategies.
  • Collaborates with school site faculty and staff to successfully integrate FIT-NETS into the larger school program and to support school objectives for positive student outcomes.
  • Collaborates with Physical Education Resource Specialist to maximize student benefits of school Physical Education program and student participation in FIT-NETS case management.
  • Observes the outcomes of all program pilot-testing and implementation, documents these observations in writing and communicates these observations to project staff for evaluation, reporting and continuous improvement purposes.
  • Works with the Project Coordinator to provide input on program design and subsequent revisions and FIT-NETS case management budgetary issues.
  • Collects data and documents program activities using tools and instruments developed by the ETR Research Department’s program evaluation team.
  • Documents project implementation and contributes appropriate information to project reports.
  • Participates as a member of the team in planning and carrying out project activities and taking assigned responsibility for carrying them out as planned.
  • Participates in project tasks and timeline planning.
  • Performs other duties as needed.

Accountabilities

  • Creates and maintains effective relationships with other project staff, contract instructors, school personnel, students, project partners and others involved in project activities.
  • Completes all assigned projects and tasks successfully and in a timely manner.
  • Delivers all program activities with fidelity to the program design.
  • Works cooperatively with project team in a supportive manner that encourages both teamwork and personal development.
  • Exercises mature and professional judgment in decision-making; including other project staff in the decision process as much as possible.
  • Actively supports and participates in the research and evaluation process.
  • Maintains complete and accurate documentation of project implementation and assists in development of reports.
  • Maintains effective communication with and accountability to the Project Director, Project Coordinator, Project Logistics Specialist and Project Evaluation Team members.
  • Maintains a valid driver’s license and access to a registered, properly insured personal vehicle for project requirements.

Qualifications

  • BA degree plus 2 years professional or paraprofessional experience providing counseling or advising services to alternative school students or other high risk adolescents; OR
  • Three or more years’ professional or paraprofessional experience providing counseling or advising services to alternative school students or other high risk adolescents.
  • The ability to work and establish positive relationships in a culturally appropriate manner with a diverse population; Spanish bilingual candidates will be given strong preference for this position.
  • A passion for working with alternative school students and other high-risk adolescents.
  • Demonstrable familiarity with personal physical fitness (e.g. certified personal trainer, bachelor’s degree in physical education, physical education teaching certificate, experience as an athletics coach, etc.).
  • The capacity to participate in physical fitness activities with youth 6-10 times per week.
  • General knowledge of good nutrition.
  • Good general oral communication-, interpersonal-, and case note writing skills.
  • Understanding of and ability to apply motivational interventions in both individual counseling and small group situations.
  • Valid California driver’s license and proof of insurance required.
  • Reliable personal vehicle and willingness to travel in Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties as necessary.
  • Fingerprinted and pass clearance at the Santa Clara County Office of Education.
  • The ability to correctly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Preferred:

  • Possesses a teaching credential.

Salary Range:            $ 42,000-51,000 annually, DOE. Full time. Grade level 4.  Exempt.
