Experience Corps Evaluation

Description

ETR’s evaluation of Experience Corps Bay Area, which operates programs in San Francisco, Oakland, and Marin schools, is funded by the US Department of Education. The Experience Corps model is an award-winning intergenerational mentoring strategy now operating in twenty cities across the country. The focus of the program is to (1) connect children to a caring adult mentor for the purpose of improving school and community connectivity, strengthening core academic skills and enhancing youth resilience, (2) establish critical infrastructure to support the engagement of dedicated volunteers at a significant scale in public schools located in low-income, ethnically-diverse neighborhoods, and (3) provide older adults a meaningful pathway to civic engagement. The evaluation includes two primary components: a process component that provides ongoing data regarding the extent and quality of program implementation and an outcome component that provides evidence on the effectiveness of ECBA in improving students’ core academic skills, strengthening school connectivity, and promoting pro-social norms and behaviors.
