ETR Associates' Dr. Douglas Kirby Leads United Nations Agencies Training in Johannesburg, South Africa

ETR Associates’ Dr. Douglas Kirby recently facilitated a 5-day training for representatives of 10 Southern African countries, co-funded by a group of United Nations agencies, including UNFPA, UNESCO, NNICEF and UNAIDS, along with HEARD, a program of the University of Kwazulu, Natal.  The training was designed to achieve two objectives: (1) increase participants’ ability to design and adapt sexuality and STI/HIV education curricula, allowing more opportunities to change sexual behaviors that affect HIV transmission, other STI transmission and unintended pregnancy or coerced sex; and (2) develop a partial blueprint for effective sexuality and STI/HIV education curricula for each participating country.  The training was conducted in Johannesburg, South Africa, with more than 65 participants.

About Dr. Douglas Kirby

For more than 30 years, Douglas Kirby, PhD, has directed statewide and nationwide studies of adolescent sexual behavior, abstinence programs, sexuality and STD/HIV education programs, school-based clinics, school condom-availability programs and youth development programs. He co-authored research on ETR Associates’ Reducing the Risk, Safer Choices, Draw the Line and All4You! curricula. All of these programs significantly reduced unprotected sex by delaying sex, reducing the number of partners, increasing condom use or increasing contraceptive use. His summaries of the effects of programs in the United States and around the world have been published by international organizations such as UNESCO and the World Health Organization.  He has also conducted research in Uganda on factors that have led to the reduction of HIV transmission in that country, and done work in Tanzania, Swaziland and South Africa.
