Development and Evaluation of a Sex Education Curriculum for Young Adults

Description

To reduce unplanned pregnancy in the U.S., we will develop and evaluate a sex education curriculum for 18-24 year olds (hereafter called “young adults”) at high risk of unplanned pregnancy. To increase both the ease of recruiting young adults and the subsequent implementation of the curriculum by many groups concerned with reproductive health, the curriculum will actually have three goals: reducing unplanned pregnancy, reducing sexually transmitted infections and increasing satisfaction with sexual experience. The development, goals, activities and teaching strategies of this curriculum will incorporate the 17 characteristics of effective curricula (Kirby et al., 2007). This proposal is for Phase 1 which includes the careful development and pilot-testing of the curriculum and an assessment of recruitment strategies in different settings. Phase 2, to be funded from additional sources, will include a rigorous evaluation of the curriculum’s impact on all three goals. Later phases will include dissemination and training.
