December 11, 2013 – ETR’s TEC (Technology-Education-Community) program has gone to the White House. Marcus Cisneros and Morelia Lopez were part of the student team from Watsonville High School in California that created an award-winning college guide app. They recently returned from Washington, D.C., where they presented their design on Capitol Hill and attended a White House briefing and reception honoring their achievement.
December 10, 2013 – ETR was recently awarded 11 National Health Information Awards for 2013 from the Health Information Resource Center (HIRC). The winning health education materials were all developed by the ETR Publishing Division's Product Development Team.
November 8, 2013 – ETR is pleased to announce that Tracy Wright will join the agency staff as the team lead for a new 5-year professional development (PD) contract from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Division of Adolescent and School Health (CDC-DASH). ETR will work strategically with CDC DASH to provide PD support to 36 states and local school districts and 40 DASH staff members.
October 31, 2013 – ETR today announced its sponsorship of an annual Kirby Summer Internship named after American Public Health Association (APHA) 2013 Sedgwick Memorial Medal Winner the late Dr. Douglas Kirby. The internship will be offered to a graduate student with an interest in the field of sexual and reproductive health, including prevention programs, implementation science, online learning and research methodology.
October 9, 2013 – California’s Clear Air Project (CCAP), a project managed by ETR, recently awarded its 2013 Public Health Leadership Award. The award was given to the Redding Rancheria Tribal Government in recognition for the Tribe’s commitment to public health and for outstanding leadership in creating and enforcing a smoke-free health clinic facility.
September 20, 2013 – ETR and the San Francisco Wellness Initiative, in partnership with the University of California Berkeley and the University of Denver, today announced the results of a breakthrough research study providing solid evidence that participation in Wellness Center services significantly increases youth development assets at school–those characteristics of the school environment that are directly linked to improved attendance and academic success.
ETRs’ Jill Denner, PhD, will present her paper “Using Game Mechanics to Measure What Students Learn” at the 7th European Conference on Games Based Learning, to be held October 3-4, 2013, in Porto, Portugal. Dr. Denner will share results of a research study that shows how game mechanics in student-created video games can be used as a window into how children are thinking.
The American Public Health Association (APHA) announced in today’s issue of The Nation’s Health that the late Dr. Douglas Kirby, Senior Scientist at ETR in Scotts Valley CA, has been posthumously awarded the APHA 2013 Sedgwick Memorial Medal. In conferring this award upon Dr. Kirby, the APHA Awards Committee acknowledged his overall contributions to the broader field of public health and public health education, as well as his significant and substantial contributions to health promotion.
ETR’s Dr. Erin Cassidy-Eagle has been invited to speak at a Veterans Administration workshop in Palo Alto, California. Her presentation will be titled Sleep in the Veteran Population: Assessment, Diagnosis, Treatment and Related Clinical Issues.
With the ultimate goal of promoting healthy growth and development of youth by giving them the knowledge and skills for making healthy choices, ETR has launched a break-through program, the HealthSmart Digital K-12 Health Education Curriculum.
ETR has announced that Jay M. Bernhardt, PhD, MPH, Department Chair and Professor of Health Education and Behavior at the University of Florida (UF) has joined the agency’s Board of Directors. The Founding Director of the Center for Digital Health and Wellness at UF, Dr. Bernhardt is widely recognized as a visionary leader and innovative scholar on the application of communication, marketing and new media to public health, health care and medicine.
ETR has announced that Michael P. Cornelison, founder and CEO of IHL Generations, a privately held aging services company based in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, has joined the agency’s Board of Directors. Mr. Cornelison has had over 30 years of experience in the health care and health services industries. Prior to creating IHL Generations, he co-founded the health care services company ConsentialHealth, Inc. He has also held positions of CEO and vice-president in organizations such as United Health Group and ReliaStar Financial Corporation.
