Senior Training Specialist
New York City/Long Island-based or San Francisco/Monterey Bay Area-Based or Other Telecommuter
ETR Associates, a private, non-profit, health education organization, is seeking a qualified person to join its Training Department as a Training Specialist III.
Education, Training and Research (ETR) Associates is a national center for training, research, publishing and information management in a variety of public health issues including adolescent sexual and reproductive health.
Overview
The Senior Training Specialist will work on two CDC Division of Reproductive Health (DRH)-funded projects housed in ETR’s Training Department: 1) the Promoting Science-based Approaches (PSBA) project, and 2) the Adaptation Guidelines project. The Training Specialist will be responsible to develop and implement training and technical assistance services for state adolescent pregnancy prevention coalitions and their local constituents. Under the supervision of the Senior Program Manager, the Training Specialist will: 1) develop training designs for science-based adolescent pregnancy and STD/HIV prevention programs (SBP), and science-based practices (e.g., conducting need and resources assessments, developing logic models, etc.), 2) develop technical assistance tools and resources, 3) analyze SBP in order develop tools to support practitioners in effectively adapting them, and 4) deliver trainings and technical assistance events.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Conceptualizes and writes detailed training designs and associated training materials (e.g., Power Point slides, participant handouts, worksheets, etc.) for Training of Educator and Training of Trainer events.
- Demonstrates a thorough understanding of health behavior change theory, learning theory and adult learning principles by applying these theories in the development of training designs and delivery of trainings. Can teach these theories to others.
- Demonstrates a thorough understanding of effective evidence-based programs designed to prevent adolescent pregnancy and STD/HIV (e.g., Making Proud Choices, Safer Choices, Reducing the Risk, etc.) by explaining the programs’ evaluation research, theoretical underpinnings and pedagogical approaches in training designs, during training delivery and in the development of program adaptation tools.
- Independently delivers a variety of trainings, conference presentations, workshops and customized technical assistance events. Demonstrates exceptional training skills including an ability to assess for training needs, develop SMART learning objectives, present information in a clear and logical way, facilitate a variety of training activities including large group discussions and small group activities, and effectively manage conflict, and sensitive/controversial topics. May implement trainings with co-trainer or alone.
- Analyzes SBP and develops program logic models, identifies core content, pedagogical and implementation components, identifies green, yellow and red light adaptations, and other tools and resources designed to support adolescent reproductive health practitioners in adapting SBP.
- Coordinates logistics for training and technical assistance with ETR logistics staff including communications with host agency, selection of training venues, AV needs, training materials production, shipping, transportation, etc.
- Independently and accurately develops budgets for training events including fee-for-service trainings. Understands how training costs fit into the larger project budget.
- Establishes and maintains collegial and cooperative working relationships with ETR’s staff, partners, funders, clients and consultants.
- Participates in the conceptualization of Interim Progress and Final Reports and writes sections that are accurate, clear, and specific. Assists in preparation of new project proposals.
- Responsible for maintaining expertise in assigned content areas including staying up-to-date in research, program literature, and training and instructional design. Shares knowledge with project staff.

- Meets project objectives in a way that is consistent with the funder’s and ETR’s agency procedures, program, training and technical assistance standards.
- Meets project objectives within budget parameters.
- Accurately develops and monitors budgets for training events including fee-for-service trainings.
- Maintains positive and constructive relationships with project staff, partners, agencies served, the funder, subcontractors and consultants.
- Delivers high quality services that are based on current research, health behavior theories, adult learning principles, and evidence on best practice.
- Satisfactorily completes assigned and routine projects and responsibilities within stated timelines.
- Works independently to organize tasks, and at the same time, participates in cooperative project planning.
- Contributes to improving office and/or project procedures with creative and practical ideas.
- Follows agency policies and procedures.
- As a telecommuter, ensures home work-space is appropriately configured to meet ETR’s ergonomic and safety standards.
- Ensures all necessary precautions are taken to secure proprietary and confidential information in home office.
Qualifications
REQUIRED:
- Master’s degree in Health Education or related field.
- One to three years experience implementing programs that address adolescent sexuality, pregnancy prevention and/or STD/HIV prevention.
- Three to five years direct training experience including the writing and delivery of training designs and associated materials.
- Extensive knowledge, and sensitivity of adolescent pregnancy and STD/HIV including epidemiology, risk and protective factors related to sexual risk-taking behavior, and cultural values and beliefs and practices of American youth especially African American and Latino youth.
- Exceptional skills in the conceptualization and development of training design and participant materials.

- Demonstrates computer competence including Microsoft Word 2007, Power Point and Excel.
- Qualified candidate is located, or is willing to relocate, to the New York City/Long Island area; willing to also interview candidates located in San Francisco/Monterey Bay area; willing to consider other telecommuting options.
- Qualified candidate is available to work 100% time
- Willingness and ability to telecommute with Senior Program Manager located in Queens, NY and ETR office in Scotts Valley, CA.
- Willingness to travel within the United States at least 25% time.
- Valid driver’s license and proof of insurance certificate is required.
Salary Range: $58,000 to $64,000 annually, DOE. Full time. Grade Level 4, Exempt.
